Bradford Factor Score Calculator

The Bradford Factor is a formula used to measure employee absence patterns, helping HR professionals identify problematic attendance trends. Use our free calculator to determine the Bradford Factor score for any employee based on their absence frequency and duration.

Calculate Bradford Factor Score

Enter the number of separate times the employee was absent

Enter the total number of days the employee was absent

Formula: Bradford Factor = S² × D
Where S = Number of absence spells, D = Total days absent

Understanding the Bradford Factor

The Bradford Factor is a human resources metric that helps identify employees with frequent short-term absences, which can be more disruptive to business operations than longer, planned absences. It's calculated using a formula that emphasizes the frequency of absences over their total duration.

Bradford Factor Formula

The Bradford Factor is calculated using the following formula:

Bradford Factor = S² × D

Where:

  • S = Number of separate absence spells (instances)
  • D = Total number of days absent

The formula squares the number of absence spells, meaning that frequent short absences result in a much higher score than fewer, longer absences with the same total days.

Example Calculations

Example 1: Frequent Short Absences

An employee takes 10 separate one-day absences:

  • Number of spells (S): 10
  • Total days (D): 10
  • Calculation: 10² × 10 = 100 × 10 = 1,000
  • Bradford Factor: 1,000

Example 2: Single Long Absence

An employee takes 1 absence of 10 days:

  • Number of spells (S): 1
  • Total days (D): 10
  • Calculation: 1² × 10 = 1 × 10 = 10
  • Bradford Factor: 10

Notice how the same number of total days (10) results in vastly different scores. The frequent short absences score 1,000, while the single long absence scores only 10, demonstrating how the formula penalizes frequent, disruptive absences.

Interpreting Bradford Factor Scores

While there's no universal standard, many organizations use the following thresholds:

  • 0-50: Generally acceptable absence pattern
  • 51-200: May require informal discussion or monitoring
  • 201-500: Formal review and action may be necessary
  • 500+: Serious concern requiring immediate attention

Important: These thresholds are guidelines only. Always consider individual circumstances, medical conditions, and local employment laws when interpreting Bradford Factor scores.

Limitations and Considerations

  • The Bradford Factor doesn't account for legitimate reasons for absence (illness, family emergencies)
  • It may unfairly penalize employees with chronic health conditions
  • Always use in conjunction with other HR metrics and employee discussions
  • Ensure compliance with local employment laws and disability discrimination regulations
  • Consider the context and individual circumstances before taking action
